On this page you can find information about the Narva Art Residency’s educational programs, trainings, workshops, and other events aimed at different target groups. This is not a complete list, but a selection that illustrates the types of educational activities NART offers to its various audiences.
For locals and visitors
NART offers a diverse programme for city residents of different ages and other visitors, which can be found on the “Events” subpage. Here are some examples:
Kreenholm postcard workshops (by request)
NART offers postcard-making workshops for groups by request. Come with colleagues, classmates, or friends and try printing postcards featuring Kreenholm textile patterns. The patterns are created using linocut, a printmaking technique similar to woodcut.
Kreenholm community garden programme in summer
In the Kreenholm community garden, established next to the Narva Art Residency, local residents can tend garden beds, take part in artists’ workshops, and socialize. Each summer, the community garden hosts new artists-in-residence who engage in plant cultivation, research local flora, organize workshops, and develop the garden further.
The workshops are held in two formats: a closed workshop for clients of the Narva Social Centre and an open workshop where everyone interested is welcome to participate.
Narva Venice Embassy in summer
Narva Venice is the Kulgu area, located about 1.5 kilometres from the Narva Art Residency, featuring a network of canals, boat garages, and dacha gardens. Since 2022, the Narva Venice Embassy summer residency project has been operating in Kulgu. Throughout the summer, it hosts events where locals, artists, and visitors can get to know one another and explore art projects created during the residency.
Public workshops organized by artists-in-residence
During their residencies, many artists organize public workshops for local residents. For example, there have been craft brick-making workshops by Pavel Rotts; sculpture workshops using car tires by Zimbabwean artist Zacharaha Magasa; comic workshops by Q-Space and Elke Renate Steiner; and workshops for young people by Ukrainian artist Masha Pryven titled “Create Your Dream Passport!”, among many others.
You can find the schedule of upcoming workshops on our events page.
For teens and kids
NART offers a variety of activities for young people and children. Here you can explore some past and ongoing projects.
“Artists Are Present” residencies in schools
The aim of the program is to increase the accessibility and presence of contemporary art in Narva. It is a one-week residency format in which three artists and three schools from Ida-Viru County participate at a time. The project took place for the first time in spring 2025 and again in autumn of the same year.
“Creative Connections” workshops for classes
From November 2025 to January 2026, NART is hosting colour theory workshops for student groups from Ida-Viru County, starting from Grade 4, as part of the art education platform “Creative Connections”.
Architecture School Workshops
Various architecture workshops have taken place at NART, where young people had the opportunity to try their hand at building installations. In 2023, as part of the Architecture School program, a series of workshops for youth was held, focusing on experimenting with the creation of interactive urban space installations and small-scale model making. In 2024, as a continuation of the Architecture School, an installation workshop titled “Explore Space and Do It Yourself!”was held.
Educational Programs Accompanying Exhibitions
We offer educational programs for young people and school groups in connection with selected exhibitions to introduce contemporary art. For example, as part of the educational program “Igniting Conversations”, youth-led guided tours took place at the exhibition “No Retreat”, during which young participants introduced artworks that had particularly resonated with them. As part of the “Video Games and Arts” project, interactive sessions were held for school and kindergarten groups.
If you would like to bring your class to participate in an educational program, please send us an email to inquire about the programs available for the current exhibition: residentuur@artun.ee
For educators and teachers
NART has provided training sessions for teachers and has also helped develop a card deck for language learners.
“Creative Connections” Training Sessions
In autumn 2025, three free training sessions of the “Creative Connections” educational platform will take place at NART for teachers from schools, kindergartens, and hobby groups in Ida-Viru County, as well as for youth workers and social pedagogues.
Art Cards “Face to Face with Art”
The art card set “Face to Face with Art”, created in collaboration between the Estonian Language House, the Narva Art Residency, and art historian Maarin Ektermann, is a playful learning tool that allows participants to experience art while practicing the Estonian language at the same time. The card decks will be available for borrowing from art museums and galleries in Tallinn and Tartu.
Claire Bown Art and Cultural Mediation Training
In 2024, a hybrid training on art and cultural mediation led by Claire Bown, founder of Thinking Museum, took place at Narva Art Residency. The training was based on the “Visual Thinking in Museums” method. It consisted of an online session, a two-day in-person practice, and group work held at the Narva Art Residency.
For local artists
NART offers local artists and art enthusiasts a variety of meetings and learning formats.
NART Art Club
In the fall of 2024, the Art Club launched a three-month incubator program led by Darja Popolitova. The meetings continued the following spring. In the fall of 2025, four Art Club sessions took place, aimed at local artists and art enthusiasts who wish to advance their creative journey. The sessions will be conducted in Russian.
Art Bus Program to Narva and Tallinn
The Narva Art Residency, in collaboration with the Estonian Contemporary Art Development Center, organized an Art Bus Program between the two cities in 2023–2024. The program offered residents of Tallinn and Narva the opportunity to visit art exhibitions, meet artists, and explore cultural institutions through guided tours.
For students and researchers
NART maintains close ties with the Estonian Academy of Arts and also collaborates with other universities.
NART hosts groups from the Estonian Academy of Arts
The Narva Art Residency hosts workshops, creative camps, and other artistic projects organized by the Estonian Academy of Arts. Painting workshops, writing camps, and other sessions have taken place, giving art students the opportunity to get acquainted with the border city. For example, in June 2025, NART hosted the EKA Summer Practice in Visual Communication.
University Seminars at NART
The Estonian Academy of Arts and other higher education institutions organize seminars and lectures at NART. For example, presentations by EKA students on industrial landscapes, Tallinn University’s symposium “Rethinking Borders Creatively”, the 100th-anniversary conference of EKA’s Metal Art Department “METALL 100 – Blackout”, and the EKA conference “New Frames for Monuments: Rethinking Dissonant Heritage through Case Studies” have all taken place at NART.
NART Residents’ Lectures at EKA
From 2022 to 2024, public lectures by artists in residence at the Narva Art Residency were held regularly at the Estonian Academy of Arts in Tallinn. In these lectures, the residents spoke about the work and practice of a professional artist, what everyday life in an art residency looks like, and how to take part in opportunities offered to artists. They also presented their own creative work.
During the first two semesters, the lectures were held online and recorded for EKA TV — the 2022 lecture series and the 2023 lecture series.
