Open call for Narva Venice Embassy artist residencies

Open call for Narva Venice Embassy artist residencies

NART announces an open call for the second season of Narva Venice Embassy artist residencies. In the summer of 2023, there will be five resident spots, accompanied by the grant that will be paid for the purpose of the implementation of art intervention.

In summer 2022, Narva Art Residency successfully completed the first project of this kind in Narva Venice, for which two spaces were rented – the garage and the ground floor of the clubhouse – to host international artists. It is a system of narrow canals lined with rows of boat garages. The garages are a home to a local community that likes to go fishing and spend quality time there. Over the summer, five artists from Mexico, Switzerland, Ireland, and the USA brought their bold projects to Kulgu.  For example, Enrique Roura built a community bread oven and Elizabeth Molina created a special sound journey.  Read detailed information about the project here.

This year the aim is once again to find closer contact with the local community, to make Kulgu more visible and attractive, to give artists the opportunity to be deeply inspired by this special place, and to create artistic interventions specifically for Narva Venice.

Applications can be submitted until 27.04.2023 23:59 (Estonian time). Artists will be selected by the jury.

Accommodation: Last year the artists were living in a garage and on the 1st floor of the clubhouse.  This year circumstances might change, and the accommodation will be provided in the sea container-heated enclosure. Just like for the local people, the life of the artists here will be quite modest and ascetic. However, there will be a place to cook, sleep, work, and enjoy life on the waterfront.  There will be an outside toilet nearby. A kilometre and a half away, at the Narva Art Residency, it will be possible to take a shower and wash things.

Project: Venice art residencies are based on the implementation of specific projects. The artist is expected to develop an artistic intervention, installation, event, exhibition, or another project during the residency. The intervention should be created especially for Narva Venice.

Time period: No specific duration or time period are determined, but the minimum duration is three weeks. Please specify your preference in the application that should fall within the period from the middle of May until the end of August.

Support: The selected residents will get a grant of 500€ as well as a budget of 400€ for executing their artistic interventions.  The application should include an accurate plan for the implementation of the work and a detailed budget.

Application submission: In order to take part in the contest, please upload a file of no more than 10 MB containing the following information:

  • applicant’s name and contact information – project description (2000-2500 characters)
  • visual material illustrating the project (up to 5 photos/drawings)
  • production and financial plan of the project
  • preferred date and duration of the residency (minimum 3 weeks in the period from the middle of May until the end of August)
  • a brief profile of the artist or artist duo and links to their portfolios

Upload the file here: https://forms.gle/5oj4ghHQvahqo8ct8

Please send your application in English. Contact the organisers if you want to do it in Estonian or in Russian. The project is supported by the British Council through a P2P program.
