Bomi Son ⎜Children’s literature residency (South Korea)
15.09 – 15.10.2025
BIO
Bomi Son uses visual media such as picture books, illustrations, drawings, and comics to express her everyday experiences, feelings, and questions. She studied Painting and Art Teaching in Gwangju, South Korea, before graduating with a degree in Integrated Design in Bremen, Germany. The keyword at the cente of her work is ‘self-healing’. In this process, she naturally works with various wounds. (various forms of discrimination and violence, queer discrimination, Those who have been erased and invisibility by the majority, death, diaspora, unconscious stereotypes about certain emotions, etc. (e.g. anxiety or fear, sadness and loneliness)) On the other hand, she also expresses light and playful thoughts that arise in everyday life, and explores a warm visual language that connects with the viewer emotionally.
PROJECT
Often in our lives, we come to realize that we are different from the majority. And that feature often feels like a ‘stain’ rather than our own unique ‘pattern’, depending on our surroundings and culture. And sometimes we mistake the pattern for a stain for a long time and live believing it. But we eventually realize that it is not a stain, but our own pattern, through a precious being. Bomi Son plans to tell this story in a picture book through the characters of a duck and a cat.
