Biography
Bart Kuipers (he/him) is an artist-researcher and electronic poetry author from The Netherlands working at the intersection of technology, creative writing, and more-than- human design. He combines poetry, code, machine learning, film, XR, and other media to investigate the relationship between humans and their machines in an increasingly digitalized world. Kuipers is currently an artist in residence at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute, where he investigates the possibilities of poetic expression in chemical reactions on exoplanets.
He has developed work in collaboration with Ars Electronica (Austria), The SETI Institute (USA), University College London (UK), The Electronic Literature Organisation (USA), and Ectopia (Portugal) and has published work in Thinkpieces Review, Volume Poetry, Re- Mediate Magazine, and Reality Scratch.
Project: Situated Poetics of Narva
For Situated Poetics of Narva I will build on my ongoing research into augmented reality poetry and develop a community-co-created book of AR poems about life in Narva, on the border of Russia and NATO. Inspired by Donna Haraway’s Situated Knowledges, where she critiques the notion of a single, objective truth and proposes instead a model of “situated,” plural, and accountable knowledge, AR poems are designed to hold multiple layers of perceived reality.
AR poems are works of poetry with a layer of augmented reality that alters the meaning of the text. A poem, projected on a wall, or printed in a book, or displayed on a screen, can be viewed through a device, and blanks left in the original text are filled in, thus altering the text, and – more importantly – the meaning of the poem. This way, an AR poem is able to accommodate a plurality of perspectives in a single experience.
In co-creating AR poems I hope to spark conversation and debate, and come to a poetic consensus in polarized times.
